Google 'loves large websites'

UK retailers have succeeded in optimising their websites for top-ranking in search engines, a report has revealed.

The Greenlight report showed that 17 of the top 60 ranking e-retailers of white goods had managed to achieve greater than ten per cent visibility across search engines, when tested on a basket of 700 keywords.

Sam Tilston, online marketing director for e-retailer zoombits.co.uk, explained it is easier to rank highly on Google if you have a large website.

"Google loves large websites," he said. "SEO is a lot about the number of links you have, so the more products you are trying to push and the more you're trying to rank on Google, the more links you're going to need because you're going to need to point links at each page."

However, he noted that "if you have a large amount of products, like if you're doing a large-scale website, then you need to automate your SEO."

A recent report by Econsultancy and Guava found that 46 per cent of companies reported an increase in SEO return on investment in the last year.
