One-nineteenth of the world use Facebook

Facebook users now comprise one-nineteenth of the world's population, according to recent figures. The social networking site now has a user base of 350 million users around the world, figures released last week have revealed. Tim Gibbons, co-founder of the Social Media Portal, said this may be because Facebook "has a more generic audience" when compared with other social networks. "Broader social networks do offer greater breadth and depth due to what they are and what is provided to their audiences." Alongside the announcement of its user base milestone, Facebook detailed broad changes to its network structure, to allow for greater individual privacy. Mr Gibbons said that, given its significant user base, Facebook must bear privacy in mind, as "with social networks possessing so much data, the obvious route of profiling and research is possible, which could be risky for organisations that debate and champion privacy issues".
